Estoy escuchando / I'm listening: Scott McLemore - "Remote Location" (2012)

"Secrets of Earth", caminando lentamente hacia sitios mágicos y ocultos.

"Woods at Night", disfruten esta tranquila y estupenda noche.

From my point of view this is one of the most beautiful albums from 2012, Scott McLemore, a North American drummer, living in Iceland since many years go, and his refreshing last work called "Remote Location" (2012).

I'm writing, and also listening the album, again, and each piece of music is connected to some deep emotion, the past, the present, the place we call home, even when we're not longer there.

Scott McLemore plays with a subtle, but strong charm, he doesn't push away the rest of the musicians, he's the big landscape where his musical partners can express their feelings.

Sunna Gunnlaugs (piano & Wurlitzer), a well known and talented jazz pianist from Iceland, also Scott McLemore's wife, can be powerful and at the same time to move her fingers with a scary precision, never overshadowing the soul and heart from the music.

Óskar Guðjónsson can share his beautiful saxophone's sounds in an avant-garde jazz environment, or, as in this recording, in a place where he's closer to modern jazz, and he does a great job everywhere.

Andrés Thor is another gifted musician from that amazing musical country called Iceland, and he can jump from soft and melancholic folk sounds, to strong pure jazz labyrinths.

Róbert Þórhallsson is on charge of the double bass, and also the electric and acoustic bass guitar, he walks up and down with the kind of creativity you'll find in the whole album.

And going back to the music included here, I can tell you things like these:

"Remote Location", a warm musical lanscape.

"Secrets of Earth", slowly walking into magical and hidden places.

"Citizen Sitting Zen", a tender trip to the best places inside us.

"Una Danza en la Cocina", a brief and gentle invitation to a beautiful dance.

"Charlottesville", remembering old but not forgotten places.

"Dunegrass", looking for a place where the green is greener.

"Woods at Night", enjoy this quite and marvellous night.

"Waking", a good time for a slow wake up.

"Balkelero", a bright day can surprise us everywhere.

"Don't Miss the Signs", a very sweet blues.

"Movement for Motian", a heartfelt tribute to the wonderful Paul Motian.

After all, listening this album, I can trust there's a lot of good music to discover out there, we must thanks to people as Scott McLemore and to everyone involved in this project, because they turned on those bright musical lights once again.

Estoy escuchando / I'm listening: Nicolás Chientaroli Trío - "La casa caliente" / "The hot house" (Sofá Records, 2011)

This recording was on the streets by the end of 2011, but only some months after 2012 beginning it finally fell on my hands.

It is trange when we must talk about the great experience from very young musicians, not only Nicolás Chientaroli (piano), Carlos Alvarez (double bass) and Hernán Rodríguez (drums) can say a lot about their wonderful musical battles, the three talented musicians are from several year ago an important reference in different projects in jazz scene from Argentina.

"La casa caliente" / "The hot house" (Sofá Records, 2011) is the trio second album, after the fantastic "La música está prohibida" / "The music it's forbidden" (2007), and even when the first album was clearly under the free jazz atmosphere, this new work, keeping that refreshing air, is a creative tribute to the jazz before avant-garde.

"Genekrupezca", and its crazy swing from the old jazz orchestras, jumping to our present with charm and style.

"Pasos de gigante" / "Giant steps", developing curious paths between peace and tension.

"Thonk", a great musical piece where you can understand the presence from the marvellous Carlos Alvarez (double bass) and Hernán Rodríguez (drums)

"¡¡Ahí vienen los indios!! / "The indians are coming!!", a magical trip to our roots, flying with the help from Nicolás Chientaroli's amazing piano subtleties.

"ABC", a lively moment to catch our breath back.

"Donde hay un perro, cotiza la carne" / "Where there's a dog, meat price is high", some blues air is always welcome.

And after those beautiful six musical pieces, you've got the chance to open your souls, hearts, and ears, to good music, the kind of music we need to keep our brains in good shape, and happy.

Estoy escuchando / I'm listening: Ada Rave Cuarteto - "La continuidad" / "The continuity" (PAI Records, 2012)

"Out to lunch" / "Salí a almorzar", un gran homenaje al único e incomparable Eric Dolphy.

A lot of musical water under the bridge since my first article about Ada Rave in this blog, that was 2008.

Ada Rave was busy learning, teaching, recording in other projects, and this 2012 album is a fantastic musical statement about her brilliant present.

Beyond the powerful sounds in Ada Rave's sax, and the great partnership with two young musicians as Martín de Lassaletta (double bass and percussion) and Martín López Grande (drums), there's a presence very, very important in this album: Wenchi Lazo on guitars and processors, a musician with a unique talent and experience, not only for the Argentina's music scene, his abilities and creativity with the guitar can go easily out of this word.

If you take a quick look to the names of the pieces included in this recording you'll find good clues about the kind of music recorded, a marvellous tribute to free jazz and avant-garde, but also to some of the previous paths in that direction.

The intro to "La lente mágica de Ornette" / "Ornette magic lens" with the sax screaming its deep angst, and the electric guitar on the back showing the door to some relief.

"Baila con Monk" / "Dance with Monk", simple, an invitation to a soulful free jazz bop dance.

"El garca de Noé" is the kind of introspective travel mass music, sadly, can give us (or doesn't want to do it).

"El tono y la ética Braxtono" / "The tone and the Braxtone ethics", some punk rock meet furious jazz sounds, a great marriage.

"Jardín Chino" / "Chinese garden" is a curious travel to the center of free jazz touched by some oriental sunlight.

"No te olvides de las cosas sencillas" / "Don't you forget the simple things", a tender invitation to keep our human side alive and kicking.

"Utopías humánicas" / "Humanic utopias", from the calm to the storm, in two easy steps.

"Out to lunch", a great tribute to the one and only Eric Dolphy.

"La nave del poeta" / "The poet ship", a magical travel thanks to Wenchi Lazo's creative musical wings.

My good friends, another beautiful jewel in the free jazz and avant-garde world, a recording you'll enjoy from beginning to end, so, run now and get this amazing album.

Estoy escuchando / I'm listening: Tatiana Castro Mejía - "Ciclos" / "Cycles" (PAI Records, 2011)

Good time for a new apology, this time dedicated to the fantastic Tatiana Castro Mejía, the talented jazz pianist from Colombia, living in Argentina since some years ago. In the beginning of 2012 she gave me her beautiful album "Ciclos" / "Cycles" (PAI Records, 2011), a delightful travel into free jazz and avant-garde territory, but also with very interesting touches here and there from the South American folkloric music.

Those intense South American feelings are present in the introduction to the album with “La Covacha”, a bewitched dance, with the bright presence from Ada Rave on tenor sax.

“Para Noia” is a mysterious and magical musical labyrinth, and “Ciclos” a tender moment to discover not only the great quality from Tatiana Castro Mejía’s technique, also the important support from Germán Lamonega on double bass and Martín López Grande on drums.

“Fragmentos 1” is the first part from a three part collective composition and improvisation piece, a wonderful work, with an introspective take off, a growing freedom atmosphere on “Fragmentos 11”, and a return to the melancholic mood on “Fragmentos 111” .

"Mango Chiche, plátano maduro" is pure jazz, with an out of the ordinary swing.

On “Lunes 13, sábado 25” the Latin spirit is under the surface, even then pretty strong, and the tenor sax plays a dense carpet of sounds.

“El Alambique”, where Tatiana Castro Mejía plays the piano with an energetic subtlety, in a marvellous interaction with the rest of the band.

And to close, “Fiasco”, a tribute to the one and only Paul Motian, not only a great drummer, also an intelligent composer.

As you can see there’s a lot to enjoy in one of the best jazz albums from 2012, you can put the label you want, jazz, free jazz, avant-garde, with an interesting twist into some quiet influence from South American folkloric music, but if you want to enjoy the whole experience the best way, put labels aside, good music is in each piece from this unique album.

Estoy escuchando / I'm listening: Sunna Gunnlaugs - "Long Pair Bond" (Sunny Sky, 2011)

"Safe from the World" tiene un extraño, y mágico aire Latino.

"Diamonds on the Inside", creciendo hacia la felicidad.

"Not What But How", una maravillosa y no respondida pregunta musical.

First of all I need to send a big, big apology to my dear Sunna Gunnlaugs, that amazing and talented jazz pianist from Iceland, she sent me this album almost a year ago. All I can say in my defence, well, it was a complicated year, still is, but music, specially as the high quality compositions you'll find here, must be listened and enjoyed everywhere.

A tender melancholy will catch you in "Long Pair Bond", with a beyond words work from Scott McLemore on drums.

The beautiful interaction between Sunna Gunnlaugs and bassist Þorgrímur Jónsson in "Thema"'s introduction, will take us on a magical trip to the Iceland shores.

Even with its close to dark title,"Autumnalia" can shows some space for optimism too.

"Elsabella" is an open door to jazz from times we left behind, and a good chance to remember that we need to keep, as Dizzy Gillespie said once: “One foot in the past and one foot in the future.”

A soft funky air touch us in "Crab Canon".

"Fyrir Brynhildi" is an invitation to a slow dance in the evening, with Sunna Gunnlaugs showing the road to be followed by her partners in the trio.

"Safe from the World" has an strange, and magic, Latin air.

"Diamonds on the Inside", growing into the happiness.

"Not What But How", a wonderful and unanswered musical question.

"Vicious World", taking a deep look inside ourselves, before goodbye.

After all, a jazz recording full of surprises, interesting from the very beginning of the project, finally done thanks to funds raised at Kickstarter, and with three marvellous musicians in the peak of their art.

Norris Trío: Bello jazz en Bandcamp / Beautiful jazz at Bandcamp

Since some years ago the Norris Trío is one of the best examples to believe that music, specially the good one, will be in Earth for many, many years.

Sadly, it wasn’t too easy to obtain the music from this avant-garde jazz trío from Argentina, always under the talented direction from Enrique Norris (cornet, keyboards), and his creative partnership with two bright musicians as Pablo Díaz (drums) and Cristián Bórtoli (double bass).
As you can see if you read my previous article, now the double bass is on Maximiliano Kirszner’s hands.

Of course you can find, as usual, the unique CDs with the hypnotic collage covers in the Norris Trío’s concerts, but now four albums from the band are available at Bandcamp, just for five dollars each, can you imagine?, refreshing and marvellous free jazz for that incredible amount of money.

So, open your wallet, even in this troubled economic times some good music can help you to keep your souls alive and kicking.
