Ali N. Askin: aún hay buena música allí fuera... / Ali N. Askin: there's still good music out there...

From time to time social networks are really magical, very useful places to refresh our memory, suddenly, a gentle man from Germany, son of Turkish immigrants, isn't just another name on internet, he is the talented musician Ali N. Askin.

As I told him, "yes, I know your work", but with all the information in our little heads we left many music behind, wonderful music, just to make space to the incredible amount of art we want to absorb.

So, this encounter in Twitter, was good enough to go back to Ali N. Askin music and history, a very rich one, from his beginning working with a number of different kinds of bands and projects as pianist, keyboarder and composer, also radio moderator, copyist, editor, music teacher and night porter, to a special moment in his career, from 1991 to 1993, as Frank Zappa's assistant for the project "The Yellow Shark" (with the Ensemble Modern).

Later, his collaboration with the brilliant composer and director Heiner Goebbels, in the orchestral project "Surrogate Cities", and the music theater work "Die Wiederholung".

He has appeared as a guest artist (keyboards) in performances with several orchestras (Bochum Symphony, BBC Scottish Orchestra, etc.) and theaters (TAT Frankfurt, Hebbel Theater Berlin, ATEM Nanterre / Paris, Theaterfestival Zürich, etc.).

Ali N. Askin has a special pasion for radio, television and movies, he composed and produced the music and sound design for the documentary "Ratten" (ARTE / WDR), which was awarded the Grimme Prize in 1999.

From rock, jazz, funk, contemporary, to electronic and electro-acoustic music.

A musician opening spaces, a beautiful task, sadly not many musicians are following that path these days, that's why I'm talking about Ali N. Askin here, encouraging all of you to pay attention, to open your hearts, souls and ears, to drink from this music, as fresh water in the desert...

Simple as that. No pompous speech, no sir, not his style. Just fix in my mind and heart his talent in the movies, theater and literature, on the stage, or behind the curtains, writing, directing.
Two movies are for me a a vivid depiction from his art: "Las bicicletas son para el verano" - "Bicycles are for the summer" - (Jaime Chávarri, 1984) and "El viaje a ninguna parte" - "Voyage to nowhere" - (Fernando Fernán Gómez, 1986), the first one also a success at the theater, a beautifully sad story about the terrible impact from the the Spanish Civil War on the common people, the second one, a poignant reflexion about the word of theater and life.
Life, as he said once, more important that art, a faithful anarchist, a fighter for freedom, well, sorry Fernando, I'm getting sentimental, and pompous, will be hard to walk without your "physical presence" close to us...
Then, back to the beginning, thanks Fernando, thanks for your art, and for your life...

Festival Tr3s en Domus Artis, Espacio Ecléctico y NoAvestruz / Tr3s Festival at Domus Artis, Espacio Ecléctico and NoAvestruz

Triunvirato.

The Tr3s Festival it's one of the best ideas I'd seen in many years. Three different cultural spaces, joining forces to deliver wonderful art, building something using all the things they have in common, as the base of a non usual approach to the music, theater, dance and visual arts scene from Argentina.
A warm welcome to this idea from the good people from Domus Artis (Triunvirato Av. 4311,Villa Urquiza, Autonomic City of Buenos Aires, Argentina), Espacio Ecléctico (Humberto Primo 730, San Telmo, Autonomic City of Buenos Aires, Argentina) and NoAvestruz (Humboldt 1857, Palermo NoHollywood, Autonomic City of Buenos Aires, Argentina).
From wednesday 14 to friday 30, november 2007, and you can get the "special ticket", to enjoy a show in each one of the spaces during the Tr3s Festival.
Excellent art, at good prices, in beautiful and comfortables places, I think you can't ask for more, because this is too close to Paradise...
