Hace un par de días más música de Donny McCaslin llegó a mis oídos, antes de eso, sólo algo de sus trabajos anteriores con Maria Schneider y Dave Douglas estaban en mi colección de discos, pero ahora, gracias a mis amigos de Sunnyside Records, conozco un poco más.
El Donny McCaslin Group estará tocando mañana, martes 18, septiembre 2007, 19:30 & 21:30 hs., en el Blue Smoke Jazz Standard (116 Este Calle 27, New York), presentando su nuevo álbum "In Pursuit" (Sunnyside Records, 2007), y por supuesto algo de su predecesor: "Soar" (Sunnyside Records, 2006).
Donny McCaslin toca el saxo tenor, flauta, flauta alto, y su sonido, especialmente con el saxo tenor, realmente me golpeó, hay talento, pero hay alma también, algo que no encontrarán fácilmente en estos días.
Los otros miembros de la banda son Dave Binney en saxo alto (también el productor de "In Pursuit"), Ben Monder en guitarra, Scott Colley en contrabajo, Adam Cruz en batería (en la grabación pueden escuchar a Antonio Sánchez).
Desconozco si este saxofonista nominado al Grammy está muy preocupado sobre los premios, pero de seguro su jazz es un obsequio para todos nosotros, humildes amantes de la música.


Just a couple of days ago more Donny McCaslin's music reached my ears, before that, just some from his previous works with Maria Schneider and Dave Douglas were in my record collection, but now, thanks to my friends from Sunnyside Records, I know a little more.
Donny McCaslin Group will be playing tomorrow, tuesday 18, september 2007, 7:30 & 9:30 pm, at the Blue Smoke Jazz Standard (116 East 27th Street New York), presenting his new album "In Pursuit" (Sunnyside Records, 2007), and of course something from its predecessor: "Soar" (Sunnyside Records, 2006).
Donny McCaslin plays tenor saxophone, flute, alto flute, and his sound, specially with the tenor saxophone, really hit me, there's talent, but there's soul also, something you can't find easily these days.
The other members from the band are Dave Binney on alto saxophone (also the producer of "In Pursuit"), Ben Monder on guitar, Scott Colley on acoustic bass, Adam Cruz on drums (on the recording you can listen Antonio Sánchez).
I don't know if this Grammy - nominated saxophonist it's too worry about the awards, but for sure his jazz is a great gift for all of us, humble music lovers.

No es un gran secreto el gran trabajo de la gente de Sunnyside Records para editar buena música, contra la marea y con gran esfuerzo, entonces, un doble agradecimiento por estas
dos nuevas grabaciones.


Happy Apple - Happy Apple Back On Top (SSC1172).
Fundada hace doce años en Minnesota, esta banda es ahora una fruta madura, madura mis amigos, no podrida.
El bajista Erik Fratzke, el saxofonista Michael Lewis y el baterista Dave King (también en The Bad Plus), juntos para demostrar que si son suficientemente sabios, como Happy Apple, para comprender la libertad en el mundo del jazz, existe mucho espacio para disfrutar el viaje.

Helen Sung - Sungbird (SSC1173).
La combinación de jazz y "música clásica" no es algo nuevo, pero es siempre un asunto riesgoso, y si una de las fuentes de inspiración es Isaac Albéniz, aún más.
Helen Sung está claramente buscando algunos sonidos desde el alma para agregar a este tradicional encuentro entre estos estilos musicales, y con la buena compañía de Marcus Strickland en saxo, Samuel Torres en percusión, Nasheet Waits en batería y Reuben Robers en contrabajo, su piano suena como la nave perfecta para navegar con inteligencia en un mundo musical en donde es difícil encontrar maravillosa música como esta.

It's not a big secret the great work from the people from Sunnyside Records to release good music, against the tide and with a great effort, then, a double thanks for these two new recordings.

Founded twelve years ago at Minnesota, this band is now a mature fruit, mature my friends, not rotten.
Bassist Erik Fratzke, saxophonist Michael Lewis and drummer Dave King (also in The Bad Plus), together to show that if you're wise enough, as Happy Apple, to understand the freedom in the jazz world, there's a lot of space to enjoy the ride.

The combination of jazz and "classical music" it's not a new thing, but it's always a risky business, and if on eof the inspiration sources is Isaac Albéniz, even more.
Helen Sung it's clearly searching for some sounds from the soul to add to that traditional encounter between those musical styles, and with the good company from Marcus Strickland on sax, Samuel Torres on percussion, Nasheet Waits on drums and Reuben Robers on acoustic bass, her piano sounds like the perfect ship to sail with intelligence in a musical world where it's hard to find wonderful music like this.
