Before the end of the year I want to send a special thank you note to Dannie Vieten.
Some months ago, Dannie gave me the chance to write about one of the most beautiful albums of the year, Mette Juul * “Change”.
Here’s the article.

Well my friends, I’m going back to my beloved Nordic Europe, this time Denmark, and, thanks to Mette Juul, and some good musical friends of hers, with beautiful, superb music.

As in her previous album, “There is a song” (Universal, 2015), you’ll find the perfect balance between her own compositions and jazz standards. Mette Juul is a wonderful and gifted composer, and she loves jazz, an excellent combination.

Old jazz gems as “Beautiful love” (Wayne King, Victor Young, Egbert Van Alstyne, and Haven Gillespie, 1931), and “Without a song” (Vincent Youmans, Billy Rose, and Edward Eliscu), with this version it was love at first sight for me. From there a lovely jump into modern jazz and the wonderful "The Peacocks”, written for the same name album by Jimmy Rowles, back in 1977.

I love bossa nova and I love Antonio Carlos Jobim, that’s why I need to give some space to two compositions by this amazing artist included in the album, “Double Rainbow” (“Chovendo Na Roseira”) and an absolutely favorite of mine, “Dindi”. Mette’s voice is here floating with a unique warm over the guitar and double bass in the first one, and in “Dindi” giving a gentle caress to the song with a subtle, faster tempo.

The last song, “Evening song”, is the ideal song to close a top level jazz album. Above I’m just talking about one song here and there, but there’s no a single wrong turn in any of the thirteen songs included.

You can listen Mette Juul voice walking each path with tenderness, the same feelings when she has the chance to play guitar, and what to say about her musical partners in this magical adventure, except out of this world compliments.

Lars Danielsson (Sweden) on double bass and cello. Yes, I know Lars from the very beginning, and he’s better and better in each new recording, you can enjoy his powerful sound again here, excellence as usual.

Ulf Wakenius (Sweden) on guitar. From the old days with Oscar Peterson, unforgettable moments, to his work with his son Eric. One of the undeniable references for modern jazz guitar players.

Heine Hansen (Denmark) on piano, celeste, Rhodes and harmonica. More talent… From Johnny Griffin, Phil Woods, and Benny Golson to Cæcilie Norby, Hans Ulrik, and Erik Norström, and beyond.

Gilad Hekselman (Israel) on guitar. A long an intense road since the days in New York, 2004, sharing great projects with geniuses as John Scofield, Terri Lyne Carrington, Danilo Pérez, ChrisPotter, Christian McBride, Jeff “Tain” Watts.

Per Møllehøj, from Denmark too, a fantastic jazz guitar player.

For sure this will be one of 2019 best albums, not only for the jazz lovers, because for Mette Juul jazz is just a beautiful and wonderful playground, to grow creatively further and further. I hope you’ll enjoy this delightful albums as I did, as I do. And, if you know me, there’s only one more thing to say: Everyone is invited!!!

Hace algunos meses, Dannie me dio la oportunidad de escribir sobre uno de los discos más bellos del año, Mette Juul * “Change”.

Bueno mis amigos, estoy regresando a mi amada Europa Nórdica, en esta ocasión Dinamarca, y, gracias a Mette Juul, y a algunos de sus buenos amigos musicales, con bella, estupenda música.

Como en su disco anterior, “There is a song” (Universal, 2015), encontrarán el equilibrio perfecto entre sus propias composiciones y standards de jazz. Mette Juul es una compositora maravillosa y talentosa, y ella ama el jazz, una combinación excelente.

Viejas joyas del jazz como “Beautiful love” (Wayne King, Victor Young, Egbert Van Alstyne, y Haven Gillespie, 1931), y “Without a song” (Vincent Youmans, Billy Rose, y Edward Eliscu), con esta versión fue amor a primera vista para mi. Desde allí un adorable salto hacia el jazz moderno y la maravillosa "The Peacocks”, escrita para el disco del mismo nombre por Jimmy Rowles, allí por 1977.

Amo la bossa nova y amo a Antonio Carlos Jobim, por ese motivo debo dar espacio a dos composiciones de este asombroso artista incluidas en el disco, “Double Rainbow” (“Chovendo Na Roseira”) y una de mis grandes favoritas, “Dindi”. La voz de Mette flota aquí con una calidez única, sobre la guitarra y el contrabajo en la primera, y en “Dindi” ofreciendo suaves caricias a la canción con un sútil, más veloz tempo.

La última canción, “Evening song”, es la canción precisa para cerrar un disco de jazz de alto nivel. Arriba estoy hablando de una canción por aquí y otra por allí, pero no hay ni un sólo paso en falso en las trece canciones que componen el álbum.

Pueden escuchar la voz de Mette Juul caminando por cada sendero con ternura, los mismos sentimientos cuando tiene la oportunidad de tocar la guitarra, y que decir de sus socios musicales en esta mágica aventura, excepto elogios de fuera de este mundo

Lars Danielsson (Suecia) en contrabajo y cello. Si, conozco a Lars desde sus primeros pasos, y él está mejor y mejor con cada grabación, pueden disfrutar de su poderoso sonido una vez más aquí, excelencia como es habitual.

Ulf Wakenius (Suecia) en guitarra. Desde viejos tiempos con Oscar Peterson, momentos inolvidables, a su trabajo con su hijo Eric. Una de las referencias innegables para los guitarristas de jazz moderno.

Por cierto este será uno de los mejores discos de 2019, no sólo para los amantes del jazz, porque para Mette Juul el jazz es sólo un bello patio de juegos, para crecer creativamente más y más. Espero que disfruten de este delicioso disco como lo he hecho yo. Y si me conocen, sólo hay una cosa más que decir: Están todos invitados!!!

"Where Jazz Lives In": beautiful music, the ticket to a unique and delightful universe / hermosa música, el pasaje a un universo único y delicioso

“Where Jazz Lives In” is a project to provide a valuable experience for the good music lover, to be part of the jazz scene (a more intimate visit to jazz clubs, encounters with musicians) not a simple presence at a show.

We chose a group of jazz clubs we believe are the ideal places to enjoy music the way we understand it should be loved.

We’ve got a vast itinerary in the communication business (advertising, tv, radio, film industry, graphic media), and also in the cultural management field, both Argentina and abroad.

We’ve been personally involved in jazz festivals production, and even more than “music management”, we’ve been able to build a solid friendship with musicians around the world.

We’d really like to know if you’re interested in being part of this project, which would mean a worldwide exposure for the clubs, and of course for the musicians.

If you see the fantastic desire behind “Where Jazz Lives In” to encourage people to appreciate good music, as clear as we do, we could talk about the details to include you, club or musician, looking for the best way to share unique music and a great environment to discover such fantastic art form, we still dare to call jazz.

“Where Jazz Lives In” (“Donde Vive El Jazz”) es un proyecto para acercar al amante de la buena música a una gran experiencia, ser parte del ambiente del jazz (una visita más intima a clubes de jazz, encuentros con músicos) no la simple asistencia a un show.

Hemos elegido un grupo de clubes de jazz que creemos son los sitios ideales para disfrutar de la música en la forma que entendemos debe hacerse.

Tenemos una gran experiencia en el negocio de las comunicaciones (publicidad, tv, radio, cine, medios gráficos), y también en el campo de la gestión cultural, tanto en Argentina como en el exterior.

Hemos estado personalmente involucrados en la producción de festivales de jazz, y más que “management de música” fuimos capaces de construir una sólida amistad con músicos de todo el mundo.

Nos gustaría saber si están interesados en ser parte de este proyecto, lo que significaría una proyección mundial para los clubes, y por supuesto para los músicos.

Mette Juul’s “There is a Song” (Universal Music, 2015)

Some years ago I had the luck to met Jesper P. Graugaard, a fantastic cultural manager from Denmark, with a wide experience to work with artists and record labels, not only from Denmark, also from abroad. He is so kind that I’m all the time receiving wonderful new music from artists and labels he works with, and even when for several reasons I been a little out of touch with my followers, well, this is the right time to give Jesper P. Graugaard and to PG Special Agent, his awesome project, the space he deserves.

My first choice will be to talk about the last album Jesper P. Graugaard sent me, from Mette Juul, a talented singer, guitar player, and Danish composer, with music produced by Mette Juul and Nikolaj Hess, a Danish pianist who lives in New York.

Another brilliant collaborator, for the second time involved in a Mette Juul’s project, is the fantastic trumpet player Ambrose Akinmusire, and with the magic from Mike Moreno on electric guitar, Joe Sanders on double bass, and Rodney Green on drums, the environment to play beautiful and creative jazz is perfect.

Mette Juul’s compositions can dance between the poignant tenderness from “There Is a Song”, the title album, to the hypnotic melody and rhythm from “Berlin Is Calling”, and the feeling of walking on autumn leaves as in “Northern Butterfly”.
There’s also space in this marvellous album for special songs from two great musicians: Leonard Cohen with “In the land of Plenty” and Antonio Carlos Jobim with “Double Rainbow”.

All the music included in Mette Juul’s “There is a Song” (Universal Music, 2015) is refreshing jazz, to make us feel a little more anxious to know about the date from a new production, I know Jesper P. Graugaard will be ready to send that wonder from the cold Denmark to hot Buenos Aires as soon as he can.

Hace algunos años tuve la suerte de conocer a Jesper P. Graugaard, un fantástico gestor cultural de Dinamarca, con una amplia experiencia para trabajar con artistas y sellos discográficos, no sólo de Dinamarca, también del extranjero.
El es tan amable que estoy todo el tiempo recibiendo maravillosa música nueva de artistas y sellos con los que trabaja, y aún cuando por varias razones he estado un poco fuera de alcance con mis seguidores, bueno, es el momento indicado para dar a Jesper P. Graugaard y a PG Special Agent, su asombroso proyecto, el espacio que él merece.

Mi primera elección será hablar sobre el último álbum que Jesper P. Graugaard me envió, de Mette Juul, una talentosa cantante, guitarrista, y compositora Danesa, con música producida por Mette Juul y Nikolaj Hess, pianista Danés que reside en New York.

Otro brillante colaborador, por segunda vez involucrado en un proyecto de Mette Juul, es el fantástico trompetista Ambrose Akinmusire, y con la magia de Mike Moreno en guitarra eléctrica, Joe Sanders en bajo, y Rodney Green en batería, el ambiente para tocar bello y creativo jazz es perfecto.

I'm listening / Estoy escuchando: Hess/ AC / Hess Spacelab - “Spacelab” (Gateway Music, 2014)

If there’s a word in my mind while listening this beautiful new album from Hess / AC / Hess Spacelab is impressionism (even with some nice Middle East touches here and there), at the same time the intense desire to stop the world just to enjoy the beauty from this music.

Nikolaj 'The Champ' Hess (piano, Wurlitzer, organ), Anders 'AC 'Christensen (accoustic and electric bass), and Mikkel Hess (drums), are the perfect team to put Vejle, Denmark, in the musical map.

The first album from the trio, “The Champ” (2009), produced by Jens Mikkelsen, was the perfect warm up to open the door in a jazz territory where we love to travel, and after these years the band quality in compositions and improvisation is even better, yes, that’s possible!

So my friends, you know I don’t like to talk too much, or to explain note by note wonderful music, as I love to say, just open your souls, hearts, and ears of course, to this amazing musical landscape, Hess / AC / Hess Spacelab are here to stay.


Si hay una palabra en mi mente mientras escucho este hermoso nuevo álbum de Hess / AC / Hess Spacelab es impresionismo (incluso con algunos agradables toques de Oriente Medio aquí y allí), al mismo tiempo el intenso deseo de detener el mundo para disfrutar de la la belleza de esta música.

Nikolaj 'The Champ' Hess (piano, Wurlitzer, órgano), Anders 'AC' Christensen (bajo acústico y eléctrico), y Mikkel Hess (batería), son el equipo perfecto para poner a Vejle, Dinamarca, en el mapa musical.

El primer álbum del trío, "The Champ" (2009), producido por Jens Mikkelsen, fue el perfecto calentamiento para abrir la puerta en un territorio de jazz donde nos encanta viajar, y después de estos años la calidad de la banda en composiciones e improvisaciones es aún mejor, ¡sí, eso es posible!

euskir’s txoko: Hello, again / Hola, nuevamente

For many years euskir’s txoko was an interesting corner for people searching a place to discover the independent art, specially music, even without activity I can see each week a good amount from that people visiting euskir’s txoko, so, this is the right time to say hello, again.

I don’t know if my free time will be enough to develop what I want to do now in this space, but I’ll try, the first step will be to talk about several wonderful albums, from today, and also from yesterday… I don’t pay to much attention to the words “past” and “present”, because one of the main ideas in euskir’s txoko is to keep the good independent art alive.

My friends, everyone is invited, as always, welcome back to me, and welcome back to euskir’s txoko.


Por muchos años euskir’s txoko fue un rincón interesante para gente buscando un lugar para descubrir el arte independiente, especialmente música, aun sin actividad puedo ver cada semana una buena cantidad de esa gente visitando euskir’s txoko, entonces, este es el momento indicado para decir hola, nuevamente.

No se si mi tiempo libre será suficiente para desarrollar lo que quiero hacer ahora en este espacio, pero lo intentaré, el primer paso será hablar sobre varios maravillosos discos, de hoy, y también de ayer… No presto demasiada atención a las palabras “pasado” y “presente”, porque una de las principales ideas en euskir’s txoko es mantener el buen arte independiente vivo.

Mis amigos, están todos invitados, como siempre, bienvenido de regreso a euskir’s txoko.

Ricardo Antin (1932 - 2014): la publicidad ya no es una fiesta / advertising is no longer a party

"La publicidad era una fiesta " es una autobiografía inédita de Ricardo Antin, mi querido padre, estoy diciendo "ya no es una fiesta " porque él murió el 2 de enero en Madrid, España.

En pocas palabras quiero hablar sobre la carrera profesional de mi padre, por supuesto que tengo una gran deuda con él , por los grandes valores que me enseñó, y, como mi madre, su adorable dedicación de abrir para mí el mundo maravilloso de la música, el cine, la literatura, y el interminable amor a todas las criaturas a nuestro alrededor, especialmente los gatos y los perros, pero eso es personal, un vínculo eterno con su alma.

Su primer trabajo estable en la publicidad fue en un verdadero lugar de vanguardia llamado Castignani y Burd Propaganda (1958 -1959), agencia que dejó atrás, con gran dolor, para estampar una marca imborrable en la historia de la publicidad en J. Walter Thompson (1959 -1970).

Los primeros pasos de Ricardo Antin en la publicidad fueron como redactor, pero esencialmente fue un ser humano creativo, poesía, teatro, novela, cuentos, con talento para escribir en cualquier campo, y tristemente sólo fue publicada parte de su poesía.

En J. Walter Thompson fue la llave para abrir un espacio a los trabajadores creativos, no sólo como las personas imaginando publicidad gráfica y televisiva, también para tomar decisiones importantes para la empresa, algo muy habitual hoy en día, absolutamente indignante para la "grandes jefes " en esos tiempos.

Uniendo fuerzas con su hermano , el cineasta Manuel Antin, dieron luz a una exitosa sociedad dedicada al cine publicitario (1971 - 1972).

Entonces, un largo camino, varias agencias de publicidad , hasta que fue el momento de crear la propia (1981 - 1983).

Pero él no estaba atrapado en el mundo de la publicidad, enamorado de la radio y la televisión, donde hizo varias obras asombrosas, como TVERDAD (1967), el primer programa periodístico en Argentina producido especialmente para la televisión, o " El Jazz y sus Parientes " (Inolvidable , FM Radio Rivadavia, 1987 - 1990), demostrando que su amor por la música no tenía límites, el mismo amor, suficientemente grande, para darle ideas para un espectáculo multimedia a finales de los años sesenta, "Los ejecutivos también tienen alma", más tarde un hermoso disco de jazz, "Los ejecutivos también tienen alma" (Alfa Records, 1969).

Télam (1984 - 1989) es otro hito en su carrera, gestionando la publicidad de todos los organismos y empresas del Estado, una gran experiencia, pero algo agridulce hacia el final , gracias a su honestidad fue, primero un obstáculo para el nuevo gobierno de 1989, y también una nube negra sobre las cabezas de muchas personas en el mundo de la publicidad, porque él se convierte en un desconocido para ellos después de haber dejado ese cargo.

"Los Hermosos Solitarios" (1993 ), revista cultural, es uno de sus últimos proyectos dedicados a los medios de comunicación, y su trabajo como Director de Prensa y Comunicaciones de la Fundación Cardiológica Argentina (2000 - 2001) un adiós a las posiciones importantes.

Después de su retiro, se enamoró de una Mac, de Apple, Quadra 605, gran herramienta para escribir y escribir, pero ninguna de sus novelas, cuentos, o muchas otras piezas de literatura de ese período se han publicado aún.

Bueno mis amigos, en pocas palabras, ese es un rápido vistazo a la impresionante carrera de mi padre, porque su profunda huella en esta tierra, está en mi alma, siempre y para siempre.

 


“La publicidad era una fiesta” (“Advertising was a party”) is an unpublished autobiography from Ricardo Antin, my dear father, and I’m saying “is no longer a party” because he died on January 2 in Madrid, Spain.

In a few words I want to talk about my father’s professional career, of course I’ve got a huge debt with him, for the high values he taught me, and, as my mother, his lovely dedication to open for me the wonderful world of music, movies, literature, and the endless love to all creatures around us, specially cats and dogs, but that’s personal, an eternal link with his soul.

His first steady job in advertising was in a truly avant garde place called Castignani y Burd Propaganda (1958 -1959 ), agency he left behind, with great pain, to stamp an indelible mark in advertising history on J. Walter Thompson (1959 -1970).

Ricardo Antin's first steps in advertising were as copywriter, but essentially he was a creative human being, poetry, theater, novels, short stories, with talent to write on any field, and sadly only part from his poetry was published.

At J. Walter Thompson he was the key to open a space for the creative workers, not only as the people imagining graphic and TV advertising, also to take important decisions for the company, something very usual today, absolutely outrageous for the “big bosses” on those times.

Joining forces with his brother, the filmmaker Manuel Antin, they gave birth to a successful society dedicated to film advertising (1971 - 1972).

Then, a long road, several advertising agencies, until it was the time to create his own (1981 - 1983).

But he wasn’t trapped in the advertising world, in love with radio and TV, where he made several amazing works, as TVERDAD (1967), the first journalistic show in Argentina produced especially for television, or “El Jazz y sus Parientes” (“The Jazz and its Relatives”, Inolvidable, FM Radio Rivadavia, 1987 - 1990), showing that his love for music was limitless, the same love, big enough, to give him ideas for a multimedia show by the end of the sixties, "Los ejecutivos también tienen alma" / "Executives also have soul", later a beautiful jazz album, "Los ejecutivos también tienen alma" / "Executives also have soul"(Alfa Records, 1969)

Télam (1984 - 1989) is another landmark in his career, managing the advertising from all the agencies and state enterprises, a great experience, but kind of bittersweet toward the end, thanks to his honesty was, first an obstacle for the new government from 1989, and also a dark cloud over the heads from many people in the advertising world, because he becomes a stranger to them after leaving that office.

“Los Hermosos Solitarios” (“The Beautiful Loners”, 1993), cultural magazine, is one of his last projects dedicated to the mass media, and his work as Press and Communications Director at the Argentine Heart Foundation (2000 - 2001) a farewell to important positions.

After his retirement he fell in love with a Mac from Apple, Quadra 605, great tool to write and write, but none from his novels, short stories, or many other literature pieces from that period were published yet.

Well my friends, in a few words that’s a fast glimpse on my father's impressive career, because his deep mark on this Earth, it's on my soul, always and forever.

Thanks to the new work from Linda Palmer, aka Ponor (video and art), Nick Janczak (trumpet and effects), and Phil White (glockenspiel and percussion), for three minutes and thirteen seconds we can stop the world around us, enjoying the high quality from free jazz and musical improvisation, with our eyes under the spell from Linda Palmer's (aka Ponor) amazing visual art. 

If we can't support independent artists, the real ones, we're not going to have too much beauty in our lives, simple as that.

Avant-garde jazz & visual arts: a very happy marriage

A mysterious and lovely "Ponor creature"

The marriages between different artistic forms are not always happy, even if the best artists are involved the outcome can be a disaster, since the beginning of times we can see many examples from those uncomfortable situations, but today I want to talk about the other side, when the marriage is pure happiness.

A series of videos from this year are showing the great work from some amazing artists from England, the fantastic free jazz musicians Nick Janczak (trumpet) and Phil White (drums), with the beautiful ideas from the visual artist Linda Palmer (aka Ponor).

In this brief article I want to share some of those videos, but also to talk a little about the creative independent spirit behind them, something we must enjoy, and support, in these days of ugly darkness in many artistic fields.

The partnership between Nick Janczak and Phil White is full of colors, straight warm lines, and sometimes obscure detours, with unique and refreshing sounds, and the art from Linda Palmer (aka Ponor), an artist who can paint, design an album cover, or create a marvellous world populated by her "Ponors creatures", is the perfect canvas for the music.

For The Positive Ghetto is a real pleasure to promote this new material, where music and visual arts can show us a path to make a little better the world we live in.
