Mette Juul brings back her magic, this time with a new album, to be released on April 4, 2025, through Nilento Records.
I'm very happy because Mette was kind enough to send me "Thank You & Other Stories", straight from her Danish homeland to Buenos Aires.

Original compositions and select covers ripple over delicate songs, telling stories about life's happiness and, of course, some of life's tribulations, with beautiful music always at hand to heal the wounds.

Mette Juul is no longer the novice jazz singer I met years ago, her voice has that warm Nordic rhythm and style, adding new colors and nuances to the jazz universe.

The acoustic intimacy in the album's landscape invites us to immerse ourselves, smoothly, with Mette and some very special musical partners: Peter Rosendal (piano, Fender Rhodes, trombone), Lars Danielsson (cello, double bass, melodica, Fender Telecaster, Fender Rhodes & organ), and Xavier Desandre Navarre (percussion).
Produced by Lasse Nilsson and Mette herself, we discover a musical realm to awaken our senses, and enjoy again, as we did with her previous works, "Celeste" (2023) and "Change" (2019), the talent of a unique and fantastic artist.

Mette Juul, singing and also playing acoustic guitar, gently asks for our attention to how humans are losing their humanity, a wake-up call we must accept and answer without hesitation.

This is not just another jazz album, not even just another good music recording, there's a lot to look for in it, and treasures all along the way for the dedicated listener.
The world isn't experiencing luminous times, and sometimes, the lights to find the right path are in magical music like this.

Mette Juul trae de vuelta su magia, esta vez con un nuevo álbum que será editado el 4 de abril de 2025 a través de Nilento Records.
Estoy muy feliz porque Mette tuvo la amabilidad de enviarme "Thank You & Other Stories", directamente desde su tierra natal en Dinamarca hasta Buenos Aires.

Composiciones originales y versiones seleccionadas fluyen sobre canciones delicadas, contando historias sobre la felicidad de la vida y, por supuesto, algunas de sus tribulaciones, con hermosa música siempre a mano para sanar las heridas.

Mette Juul ya no es la cantante de jazz novata que conocí hace años, su voz tiene ese cálido ritmo y estilo Nórdico, agregando nuevos colores y matices al universo del jazz.

La intimidad acústica en el paisaje del álbum nos invita a sumergirnos, suavemente, junto a Mette y algunos socios musicales muy especiales: Peter Rosendal (piano, Fender Rhodes, trombón), Lars Danielsson (chelo, contrabajo, melódica, Fender Telecaster, Fender Rhodes y órgano) y Xavier Desandre Navarre (percusión).
Producido por Lasse Nilsson y la propia Mette, descubrimos un reino musical que despierta nuestros sentidos, y que podemos disfrutar nuevamente, como lo hicimos con sus trabajos anteriores, "Celeste" (2023) y "Change" (2019), en los que se aprecia el talento de una artista única y fantástica.

Mette Juul, cantando y también tocando la guitarra acústica, nos pide suavemente que prestemos atención a cómo los seres humanos están perdiendo su humanidad, una llamada de atención que debemos aceptar y responder sin dudar.

Este no es sólo otro álbum de jazz, ni siquiera sólo otra buena grabación musical, hay mucho que descubrir en él y tesoros a lo largo de todo el camino para el oyente dedicado.
El mundo no está atravesando tiempos luminosos y, a veces, las luces para encontrar el camino correcto están en mágica música como esta.

Mette Juul * "Change" * A unique voice to discover jazz past and future / Una voz única para descubrir el pasado y el futuro del jazz

Before the end of the year I want to send a special thank you note to Dannie Vieten.
Some months ago, Dannie gave me the chance to write about one of the most beautiful albums of the year, Mette Juul * “Change”.
Here’s the article.

Well my friends, I’m going back to my beloved Nordic Europe, this time Denmark, and, thanks to Mette Juul, and some good musical friends of hers, with beautiful, superb music.

As in her previous album, “There is a song” (Universal, 2015), you’ll find the perfect balance between her own compositions and jazz standards. Mette Juul is a wonderful and gifted composer, and she loves jazz, an excellent combination.

Old jazz gems as “Beautiful love” (Wayne King, Victor Young, Egbert Van Alstyne, and Haven Gillespie, 1931), and “Without a song” (Vincent Youmans, Billy Rose, and Edward Eliscu), with this version it was love at first sight for me. From there a lovely jump into modern jazz and the wonderful "The Peacocks”, written for the same name album by Jimmy Rowles, back in 1977.

I love bossa nova and I love Antonio Carlos Jobim, that’s why I need to give some space to two compositions by this amazing artist included in the album, “Double Rainbow” (“Chovendo Na Roseira”) and an absolutely favorite of mine, “Dindi”. Mette’s voice is here floating with a unique warm over the guitar and double bass in the first one, and in “Dindi” giving a gentle caress to the song with a subtle, faster tempo.

The last song, “Evening song”, is the ideal song to close a top level jazz album. Above I’m just talking about one song here and there, but there’s no a single wrong turn in any of the thirteen songs included.

You can listen Mette Juul voice walking each path with tenderness, the same feelings when she has the chance to play guitar, and what to say about her musical partners in this magical adventure, except out of this world compliments.

Lars Danielsson (Sweden) on double bass and cello. Yes, I know Lars from the very beginning, and he’s better and better in each new recording, you can enjoy his powerful sound again here, excellence as usual.

Ulf Wakenius (Sweden) on guitar. From the old days with Oscar Peterson, unforgettable moments, to his work with his son Eric. One of the undeniable references for modern jazz guitar players.

Heine Hansen (Denmark) on piano, celeste, Rhodes and harmonica. More talent… From Johnny Griffin, Phil Woods, and Benny Golson to Cæcilie Norby, Hans Ulrik, and Erik Norström, and beyond.

Gilad Hekselman (Israel) on guitar. A long an intense road since the days in New York, 2004, sharing great projects with geniuses as John Scofield, Terri Lyne Carrington, Danilo Pérez, ChrisPotter, Christian McBride, Jeff “Tain” Watts.

Per Møllehøj, from Denmark too, a fantastic jazz guitar player.

For sure this will be one of 2019 best albums, not only for the jazz lovers, because for Mette Juul jazz is just a beautiful and wonderful playground, to grow creatively further and further. I hope you’ll enjoy this delightful albums as I did, as I do. And, if you know me, there’s only one more thing to say: Everyone is invited!!!

Bueno mis amigos, estoy regresando a mi amada Europa Nórdica, en esta ocasión Dinamarca, y, gracias a Mette Juul, y a algunos de sus buenos amigos musicales, con bella, estupenda música.

Como en su disco anterior, “There is a song” (Universal, 2015), encontrarán el equilibrio perfecto entre sus propias composiciones y standards de jazz. Mette Juul es una compositora maravillosa y talentosa, y ella ama el jazz, una combinación excelente.

Viejas joyas del jazz como “Beautiful love” (Wayne King, Victor Young, Egbert Van Alstyne, y Haven Gillespie, 1931), y “Without a song” (Vincent Youmans, Billy Rose, y Edward Eliscu), con esta versión fue amor a primera vista para mi. Desde allí un adorable salto hacia el jazz moderno y la maravillosa "The Peacocks”, escrita para el disco del mismo nombre por Jimmy Rowles, allí por 1977.

Amo la bossa nova y amo a Antonio Carlos Jobim, por ese motivo debo dar espacio a dos composiciones de este asombroso artista incluidas en el disco, “Double Rainbow” (“Chovendo Na Roseira”) y una de mis grandes favoritas, “Dindi”. La voz de Mette flota aquí con una calidez única, sobre la guitarra y el contrabajo en la primera, y en “Dindi” ofreciendo suaves caricias a la canción con un sútil, más veloz tempo.

La última canción, “Evening song”, es la canción precisa para cerrar un disco de jazz de alto nivel. Arriba estoy hablando de una canción por aquí y otra por allí, pero no hay ni un sólo paso en falso en las trece canciones que componen el álbum.

Pueden escuchar la voz de Mette Juul caminando por cada sendero con ternura, los mismos sentimientos cuando tiene la oportunidad de tocar la guitarra, y que decir de sus socios musicales en esta mágica aventura, excepto elogios de fuera de este mundo

Lars Danielsson (Suecia) en contrabajo y cello. Si, conozco a Lars desde sus primeros pasos, y él está mejor y mejor con cada grabación, pueden disfrutar de su poderoso sonido una vez más aquí, excelencia como es habitual.

Ulf Wakenius (Suecia) en guitarra. Desde viejos tiempos con Oscar Peterson, momentos inolvidables, a su trabajo con su hijo Eric. Una de las referencias innegables para los guitarristas de jazz moderno.

Heine Hansen (Denmark) en piano, celesta, Rhodes y harmónica. Más talento… From Johnny Griffin, Phil Woods, and Benny Golson to Cæcilie Norby, Hans Ulrik, y Erik Norström, y más allá.

Gilad Hekselman (Israel) en guitar. Un largo e intenso camino desde los días en New York, 2004, compartiendo grandes proyectos con genios como John Scofield, Terri Lyne Carrington, Danilo Pérez, ChrisPotter, Christian McBride, Jeff “Tain” Watts.

Per Møllehøj, también de Dinamarca, un fantástico guitarrista de jazz.

Por cierto este será uno de los mejores discos de 2019, no sólo para los amantes del jazz, porque para Mette Juul el jazz es sólo un bello patio de juegos, para crecer creativamente más y más. Espero que disfruten de este delicioso disco como lo he hecho yo. Y si me conocen, sólo hay una cosa más que decir: Están todos invitados!!!
