Sasha

Sasha, ¡qué extraña personalidad! Hace muchos años ella estaba viviendo en una casa abandonada, al lado de mi hogar, ella estaba allí porque su "familia original" trató todo para llevarla a una nueva casa, pero ella volvió a la vieja casa, una vez, dos, tres, hasta que ellos se dieron por vencido.
Al comienzo la comida estaba siempre allí para ella, pero repentinamente la olvidaron, entonces conocimos a Sasha.
Pero, ella no estaba interesada en entrar en nuestra casa, hasta que enfermó, entonces decidimos llevar a Sasha dentro de nuestro hogar,
Cuando la enfermedad quedó atrás ella se convirtió en mi "hermana Sasha", compartiendo muchos años felices, y algunos no tan felices también.
Desde hace un año la personalidad de Sasha no fue la misma, su duro carácter, bueno, un poco más suave, y supe entonces que esta no era una buena señal.
Esta mañana, Sasha murió, ¡qué maravillosa fue su compañía!, y ahora no puedo impedir volver a viejos recuerdos, "nuestros mejores tiempos", deseando para ella, ahora que ya no está dentro del frágil cuerpo de los últimos meses, mejores días, en un sitio mucho mejor que este triste Planeta Tierra en que vivimos, un sitio mucho más horrible ahora que ella no está cerca.
Oh, Sasha, cuando estoy hablando de mi hermana Sasha, estoy hablando de una querida gata...


Sasha, what a strange personality! Many years ago she was living in an abandoned house, next to my home, she was there because her "original family" tried everything to take her to a new house, but she went back to the old house, one time, two, three, until they give up.
At the beginning food was always there for her, but suddenly they forgot her, then we met Sasha.
But, she wasn't interested to get into our house, she was alone, in the abandoned house, getting our food twice a day, until she get sick, so we decided to take Sasha inside our home.
When the illness was left behind she became my "sister Sasha", sharing many happy years, and some not so happy too.
Since a year ago Shasha's personality wasn't the same, her tough character, well, a little softer, and I knew then that this was a bad sign.
This morning, Sasha died, how wonderful was her company!, and now I can't stop to go back to old memories, "our best times", wishing for her, now that's she's no longer inside the fragile body from the last months, better days, in a much better place than this sad Planet Earth we live in, a place much ugly now that's she's not close.
Oh, Sasha, when I'm talking about my sister Sasha, I'm talking about a dear cat...

No podemos entender el proceso, en el rico rompecabezas de la música Africana, sin Miriam Makeba.
Y no solamente desde un punto de vista musical, porque en la voz de Miriam Makeba hay más que sólo sonidos, estamos hablando de una profunda alma Africana, conectada a la tierra, y a las gentes viviendo en esa tierra.
Dentro de Africa, su especial cariño por su tierra natal, Sudáfrica, donde ella fue prohibida, viviendo en el exilio por muchos años, durante los días de terror del "Gobierno del Apartheid".
Por supuesto su éxito no se encuentra sólo en canciones populares como "Pata Pata", el primer paso para ser muy conocida, aún fuera de Africa, fue el documental "Come Back, Africa" (Lionel Rogosin, 1960).
Su asociación con el trompetista Sudafricano Hugh Masekela, otro maravilloso músico, añadió una nueva dimensión de colores de jazz a la fantástica música Africana.
"Mamá Africa", ese es su apodo, las palabras exactas para describir su enorme impacto en toda clase de personas a lo largo del continente.
Y más allá, sí, porque aún hasta sus últimas horas en esta Tierra, ella estuvo peleando contra la maldad del mundo en que vivimos.
Se que voy a extrañarla, pero, con la ayuda de su música, trataré de mantener vivo su mensaje, siempre luchando contra el odio y el racismo.
Finalmente, sólo algunas simples palabras, gracias Miriam, gracias por tu música, y tu gran corazón...

We can't understand the process, in the rich puzzle of African music, without Miriam Makeba.
And not only from a musical point of view, because in Miriam Makeba's voice there's more than just sounds, we're talking about a deep African soul, connected to the land, and specially, to the people living in that land.
Inside Africa, her special love for his homeland, South Africa, where she was banned, living in exile for many years, during the days of terror from the "Apartheid Government".
Of course her success it's not found only in popular songs as "Pata Pata", the first step to be very well known, even outside Africa, was the documentary "Come Back, Africa" (Lionel Rogosin, 1960).
His association with the South African trumpet player Hugh Masekela, another wonderful musician, added a new dimension of jazz colors to the fantastic African music.
"Mama Africa", that's her nickname, the right words to describe her huge impact in all kinds of people along the continent.
And beyond, yes, because even until the last hours in this Earth, she was figthing against the evil things of the world we live in.
I know I'm going to miss her, but, with the help of her music, I'll try to keep her message alive, always fighting against hate and racism.
At last, just some simple words, thanks Miriam, thanks for your music, and your big heart...

Estoy escuchando: Gabriel Cuman - "Escenas Acerca del Embrujo" / I'm listening: Gabriel Cuman -"Escenas Acerca del Embrujo" ("Scenes About the Spell")

Hace algunos meses, sí, "meses" (perdón Gabriel), Gabriel Cuman, un miembro de la banda Orquesta Horizontal, me envío su primer álbum solista, "Escenas Acerca del Embrujo".
Mis impresiones fueron realmente agradables entonces, y ahora, volviendo al álbum para escribir estas líneas, quiero alentar a todos ustedes para encontrar este bello material del bajista y compositor.
Toda la grabación suena como un viaje a través de diferentes estilos musicales, utilizando bajos eléctrico y acústico.
Incluyendo influencias de la música folklórica Argentina, jazz, tango, pero sin perder un horizonte creativo, solo en la ruta, un maravilloso viaje, y si están pensando en la banda de sonido de una película, creo que están bastante cerca del espíritu del álbum.
Me encanta cuando un músico, especialmente en estos días, con tanto horror en el "mercado musical" a nuestro alrededor, está trabajando para abrir lugares y espacios, como amantes de la música, debemos tener el mayor de los respetos por ese acercamiento a esta forma artística, gracias Gabriel Cuman, y la mejor de las suertes.




Some months ago, yes, "months" (sorry Gabriel), Gabriel Cuman, a member from the band Orquesta Horizontal, sent me his first solo album, "Escenas Acerca del Embrujo" ("Scenes About the Spell").
My impressions were really nice then, and now, going back to the album to wtite these lines, I want to encourage all of you to find this beautiful material from the bassist and composer.
The whole recording sounds as a travel through different music styles, using electric and acoustic basses.
Including influences from folk music from Argentina, jazz, tango, but without losing a creative horizon, alone on the road, a wonderful trip, and if you're thinking in a movie soundtrack, I believe you're quite close to the spirit of the album.
I love when a musician, specially in theses days, with so much horror in the "music market" around us, it's working to open places and spaces, as music lovers, we must have the greatest respect for that approach to this art form, thank you Gabriel Cuman, and the best of lucks.

Barack Obama: ¿podemos? / Barack Obama: can we?

No puedo negar las grandes emociones del último martes, comenzando el miércoles aquí en Argentina, viendo a Barack Obama como el presidente electo de los Estados Unidos de América.
La extraña conexión (culpen a Sigmund Freud), si tengo que hablar sobre mis sentimientos entonces, el libro de James Baldwin, "Sobre mi cabeza", vino a la superficie de mi memoria.
Aún cuando ese libro no es sobre, al menos no esencialmente, tensiones raciales, pueden encontrar allí una aterradora visión sobre los horrores del racismo y la intolerancia, entonces, pienso, ¿está todo bien ahora?
Por supuesto estamos viviendo, con un presidente negro electo en los Estados Unidos de América, un gran cambio, pero hay un largo camino por delante, para poner al racismo fuera de la escena para siempre.
En términos de que es lo que Barack Obama puede hacer, no estamos en el mejor de los mundos, y los Estados Unidos está dentro de este Planeta Tierra, pobreza, falta de cobertura médica, caos económico, guerras, sin mencionar la desastrosa condición en que los Republicanos están dejando al país, como siempre, y aún hay gente hablando sobre la falta de credenciales del candidato del Partido Demócrata, Barack Obama, echen un vistazo a los últimos ocho años en manos Republicanas.
Barack Obama, sólo un hombre, uno inteligente, pero no es Superman, seré honesto, soy pesimista, pero necesitamos tiempo para ver si algunas de las mejores palabras (y proyectos) de su campaña pueden caminar hacia la realidad, y aclarar las dudas sobre Africa, Medio Oriente, Cuba, y otros "problemas pesados".
"Yes, we can" ("Si, podemos") fue un maravilloso slogan, ahora es tiempo de preguntar a Barack Obama, y a nosotros mismos, dentro, y fuera de los Estados Unidos: can we? ("¿podemos?).


I can't deny the great emotions from last tuesday, starting the wednesday here in Argentina, seeing Barack Obama as the elected president of the United States of America.
The strange connection (blame Sigmund Freud), if I've got to talk about my feelings then, James Baldwin's book, "Just above my head", came to the surface of my memory.
Even when that book it's not about, at least not essentially, racial tensions, you can find there a frightening vision about the horrors of racism and bigotry, so, I think, it's all that ok now?...
Of course we're living, with a black president elected in the United States of America, a great change, but there's a long road ahead, to put racism out of the picture forever.
In terms of what Barack Obama can do, beyond the racial issues, we're not in the best of the worlds, and the United States it's inside this Planet Earth, poverty, lack of health coverage, economic chaos, wars, not to mention the disastrous condition in what the Republicans are leaving the country, as always, and there's still people talking about the lack of credentials of the candidate from the Democratic Party, Barack Obama, take a look at the last eight years on Republican's hands.
Barack Obama, just a man, an intelligent one, but no Superman, I'll be honest, I'm pessimist, but we need time to see if some of the best words (and projects) from his campaign can walk towards reality, and to clarify the doubts about Africa, Middle East, Cuba, and other "heavy problems".
"Yes, we can" was a wonderful slogan, now it's the time to ask Barack Obama, and to ourselves, inside, and outside the United States of America: can we?

Real Book Argentina

Para cualquiera cercano a la música, "Real Book" son dos palabras mágicas, una puerta abierta para descubrir toneladas de grandiosa música, y hasta la última semana, un espacio dedicado, esencialmente, a la música de los Estados Unidos, especialmente partituras de jazz.
Pero, gracias a Esteban Sehinkman y un maravilloso equipo, incluyendo músicos de varios géneros musicales, ahora tenemos el "Real Book Argentina".
Este es un proyecto sin fines de lucro, para permitir a toda clase de personas acceder a la música escrita por músicos de Argentina, accesible en un sitio de internet, pero también, como el "Real Book" original, impreso en papel.
El Real Book Argentina fue presentado el viernes 31, octubre 2008, con una gran fiesta en Thelonious Club (Salguero 1884 - 1º, Palermo, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina), y allí, música en vivo de Ramiro Flores Cuarteto, Juan Pablo Lazo, y el Ensamble RBA, con Alan Plachta.
Para celebrar estas fantásticas noticias para los amantes de la música, cada jueves de noviembre, algunos de los músicos involucrados en el proyecto estarán tocando en Thelonious Club (Salguero 1884 - 1º, Palermo, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina):

For anyone close to music, "Real Book" are two magic words, an open door to discover tons of great music, and until last week, an space dedicated, mainly, to music from the United States, specially jazz scores.
But, thanks to Esteban Sehinkman and a wonderful team, including musicians for several music genres, now we'v got the "Real Book Argentina".
This is a non profit project, to allow all kind of people to access the written music from Argentina's composers, accessible at an internet website, but also, as the original "Real Book", on printed paper.
Real Book Argentina was presented on friday 31, october 2008, with a big party at Thelonious Club (Salguero 1884 - 1º, Palermo, Autonomic City of Buenos Aires, Argentina), and there, live music from Ramiro Flores Cuarteto, Juan Pablo Lazo, and the RBA Ensemble, with Alan Plachta.

Francesca Ancarola debe encontrar una mayor audiencia, porque su trabajo es magia pura.

Francesca Ancarola en voces y composiciones, con Federico Dannemann (guitarras), Rodrigo Galarce (contrabajo), Daniel Rodríguez (batería, cajón, percusión adicional, y bombo legüero), y Mario Lecaros (piano y teclados).
Pueden encontrar rastros de jazz en la música de Francesca Ancarola, pero las raíces están conectadas profundamente con la mejor música folklórica de Chile, por supuesto, añadiendo nuevos colores a la tradición.
